Charles Earnest Scott American Legion Post 47 offers a local scholarship opportunity for eligible veterans and descendants of veterans who are pursuing education at a college, university, or trade school.
The Post 47 Local Scholarship is intended to support students who demonstrate academic effort, leadership potential, initiative, community involvement, and a connection to military service.
Applicants may attend or plan to attend a college, university, or trade school. The Scholarship Committee reviews completed applications and selects recipients without bias based on the full strength of each application.
The applicant, a parent or guardian, or a grandparent must be a veteran.
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Applicants must be enrolled or preparing to enroll as full-time students.
Leadership, extracurricular involvement, initiative, service, and personal achievement are important parts of the selection process.
Scholarships are awarded without restriction based on sex, race, color, disability, religion, or national origin.
A complete application must include the following:
The application form must be completed and signed by the applicant.
A 300- to 500-word essay addressing the applicant’s intended career, important influences, and future career goals.
Two letters from non-family members discussing the applicant’s character, leadership, accomplishments, and community involvement.
A current transcript or verification from an authorized school official. Unofficial transcripts may be accepted when permitted by the current application.
Academic performance is considered, but the highest grade-point average is not automatically the deciding factor. The Scholarship Committee also carefully considers:
The scholarship may be renewable for one additional year when the recipient maintains a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and remains properly enrolled as a full-time student for the next term or session.
Renewal requirements and award amounts are subject to the current scholarship application and approval by the Scholarship Committee.
The deadline for the next Post 47 Local Scholarship cycle has not yet been announced.

Unless the current application states otherwise, completed applications and all supporting documents must be mailed together in one package. Applications submitted by email or facsimile may not be accepted.
