Who We Are
Post 47 is part of The American Legion, a nationwide organization of
veterans committed to mutual support, continued service, responsible
citizenship, and care for the generations that follow.
Our members share a common bond of military service. Through Post
activities, veterans continue serving by assisting fellow veterans,
honoring the fallen, supporting military families, mentoring young
people, promoting respect for the American flag, and participating in
civic and patriotic events throughout Dodge City and Ford County.
Our Namesake
Charles Earnest Scott
Charles Earnest Scott was a Ford County serviceman whose life and
military service became part of the enduring history of the Dodge
City area during World War I.
Local historical records identify Scott and his close friend Howard
Gotschall as two men from Ford, Kansas, who served during World War I.
When local veterans later organized their service organizations, the
Dodge City American Legion Post was named in honor of Charles Earnest
Scott, while Dodge City VFW Post 1714 was named in honor of Howard
Gotschall.
The two organizations continue to preserve the memory of these local
servicemen through veterans’ advocacy, military honors, patriotic
ceremonies, and service to the community.
Named in honor of Charles Earnest Scott, a Ford County serviceman who
gave his life during World War I. Post 47 proudly continues his legacy
through service to veterans, patriotism, and community involvement.
