Encouraging Patriotism, Original Thought, and Student Writing
The American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Essay Contest helps students explore the meaning of citizenship, freedom, patriotism, and the service of America’s veterans through thoughtful and original writing.
About the Contest
The contest is open to students in grades 3 through 12, including students with special needs. Participants are divided into six classes based on grade level and complete an essay responding to the official theme announced for each contest year.
Local entries are submitted through American Legion Auxiliary Unit 47. Winning entries may advance through Department and national competition.

Essay Classes and Word Requirements

Contest Timeline
National Deadline: April 15
Department-winning essays must reach the National Americanism Division Chair by April 15.
Students must submit entries to American Legion Auxiliary Unit 47 before that date so local and Department judging can be completed. The local Unit 47 deadline will be announced when the 2027 contest information becomes available.
How Essays Are Judged
Does the essay fully respond to the official contest topic?
Does the essay present the student’s own meaningful ideas?
Does the essay use correct grammar and sentence structure?
Are the ideas clear, connected, and easy to understand?
Does the essay include an effective introduction, body, and conclusion?
Are words used correctly and appropriately?
Does the essay meet the required length for the student’s class?
Is the official cover sheet complete, legible, and attached?
Important Rules
- The official contest cover sheet must be completed fully and legibly.
- Each essay must be the work of one individual student.
- Entries received after the applicable deadline will not be accepted.
- Submitted essays become property of the American Legion Auxiliary.
- The decision of the judges is final.
Artificial Intelligence Is Not Permitted
Students must write their own essays. The official rules prohibit the use of artificial intelligence in writing contest entries. Essays may be reviewed for AI-generated content, and entries exceeding the permitted threshold may be disqualified.
Contest Awards
One award is presented in each class within each division. Winners receive a $50 check, and an additional $50 donation is made in the student’s name to the designated American Legion Auxiliary scholarship fund.
